Advocacy can take many forms, and for San Francisco 11th-grader Ishan Patnaik, it means running. A passionate runner since the COVID pandemic, Ishan recently decided to harness his love for the sport to support a greater cause—ending poverty. He organized a two-day, 26.4-mile run to raise both awareness and funds for Golden State Opportunity (GSO), and its commitment to breaking the cycle of poverty in California.

Over the course of two days, Ishan covered 13.2 miles each day, visiting four organizations that are also GSO Community Connect grantees. These organizations work tirelessly to provide families with resources to help break the cycle of poverty.

“I’ve lived in San Francisco all my life, but exploring it on foot has made me understand the city on a more personal level,” said Ishan. “From the rolling hills of the Presidio to the vibrant murals of the Mission, I’ve had the privilege to experience every neighborhood and its unique charm. And yet, these same streets are often lined with tents and needles, below homes where thousands more are struggling to make end’s meet. Despite the growing issue of poverty in San Francisco, it’s easy to look away—to push those things to the back of your mind even when they’re right in front of you. Partnering with GSO used what I know best—running—to draw attention to their efforts.”

Ishan’s campaign raised $1,360 for GSO. The run was inspired by California’s alarming poverty rate, which climbed to 13.2% in 2021—significantly higher than the national average of 9.8%. To highlight this critical issue and inspire others to take action, Ishan ran 26.4 miles, two miles for each percentage point of California’s poverty rate.

“I hope this message raises awareness about the issue. Instead of running past poverty, let’s run against it,” said Ishan.
