October 2, 2019 – Los Angeles – Amy Everitt, whose service at the helm of NARAL Pro-Choice California and as Vice President of Special Projects for NARAL Pro-Choice America distinguished her as a leading women’s advocate, will soon assume a new role as President of Golden State Opportunity (GSO). Joe Sanberg, GSO’s founder, announced the appointment today, saying Everitt’s passion and unparalleled experience will be key to the nonprofit’s continued success in its mission to end poverty.
Proven Leadership
“Amy Everitt has dedicated her career to expanding equality in California and across the nation, so I am confident she will be a powerful voice in the fight to end poverty,” said Joe Sanberg, founder of Golden State Opportunity. “Her proven leadership on tough campaigns, and her ability to steer cutting-edge policy through the legislature will be critical to achieving our mission: ensuring that every Californian who works — and wants to work but can’t — is able to afford life’s basic needs.”
Under Everitt’s leadership at NARAL, California has been a pro-choice pioneer — defeating extreme anti-choice measures, electing pro-choice majorities to both chambers of the state legislatures, passing groundbreaking legislation like the Duty to Dispense Act and the Reproductive FACT Act, and growing NARAL’s membership to over 200,000 strong.
“Income inequality is a life-threatening issue, and solving it deserves every ounce of political and policy influence we have,” said Amy Everitt. “It’s time for us to think outside the box, using California’s legislative leadership and economic prowess to eliminate the systemic drivers of inequality in our society. I have spent my career working to ensure that everyone regardless of gender identity, income, zip code, race or ethnicity has the ability to make the best decisions for themselves and their families. At Golden State Opportunity, I am looking forward to continuing that focus by ensuring California’s working families not only have the basic resources to live, but the tools to thrive.”
Golden State Opportunity is already a leader in expanding access to the California Earned Income Tax Credit. Everitt says the organization will continue to build upon that legacy as they work to broaden their reach across the state, and leverage their outreach expertise to connect low-income communities to other public benefit programs and services such as CalFresh, as well as ensuring an accurate count in the 2020 census.
California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis said, “Amy Everitt is an important force for social justice and women’s empowerment for our state.”
“Amy is the right choice to lead an organization like Golden State Opportunity, where her years spent advancing women’s reproductive rights can be applied to addressing another critical women’s issue: poverty,” said California State Treasurer Fiona Ma. “I look forward to partnering with Amy and GSO to end poverty as we know it in California.”
